About Course

This course provides a comprehensive overview of ADHD and Autism from a neurodiversity-affirming perspective. Rather than viewing these neurotypes solely through the medical model or deficit-based lens, participants will explore the social, cultural, and historical contexts that shape our understanding of neurodivergence. The course will also address practical strategies for assessment, diagnosis, and best practices.

Course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

What Will You Learn?

  • Deepened Empathy and Insight: Participants will be able to gain an understanding of the lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals, fostering stronger therapeutic alliances and more compassionate care.
  • Integration of Neurodiversity Principles: Participants will learn how to incorporate neurodiversity-affirming approaches into their clinical or educational settings, moving away from purely deficit-based models and towards inclusive, strengths-based approaches.
  • Enhanced Cultural Competence: Participants will become more aware of how gender, race, SES, and cultural factors influence diagnosis and treatment and adapt their practices to be more culturally responsive and eliminate barriers to care.
  • Participants will be able to identify four key concepts in the neurodiversity paradigm.
  • Participants will be able to list four approaches or accommodations that validate the lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals by emphasizing their strengths rather than deficits.
  • Participants will be able to name three ways in which gender, race, socioeconomic status, or cultural norms can bias diagnostic processes and support for ADHD and Autism.
  • Participants will be able to list three primary neurological correlates of ADHD and Autism.
